Gardeners Purley Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Purley is committed to providing professional gardening and grounds maintenance services in a manner that safeguards the health, safety and wellbeing of our employees, clients, visitors, contractors and members of the public. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety risks in all gardening and landscaping activities we undertake.
We recognise our responsibilities under relevant health and safety legislation and industry guidance, and we strive to maintain a culture where safety is integrated into everyday working practices. This policy applies to all staff, whether permanent, temporary or subcontracted, and to all locations in which we operate.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our key objectives are to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health, to minimise risks arising from our gardening operations, and to continually improve our safety performance. We aim to ensure that all tasks, from routine lawn care to more complex landscaping work, are planned and carried out safely and efficiently.
To achieve these objectives, Gardeners Purley will allocate appropriate resources, provide suitable training and supervision, and maintain clear lines of communication on health and safety matters at every level of the business.
Management Responsibilities
The management of Gardeners Purley is responsible for implementing this policy and for ensuring that health and safety considerations are incorporated into all aspects of our gardening services. This includes:
Identifying potential hazards associated with gardening work, such as the use of powered machinery, manual handling tasks, working at height, exposure to noise and vibration, and contact with hazardous substances such as fuels, oils, pesticides and fertilisers.
Carrying out risk assessments for our services and locations, updating them when work practices or environments change, and taking appropriate action to reduce risks to an acceptable level.
Providing and maintaining equipment, tools and machinery in a safe condition through regular inspection, servicing and repair, and ensuring that only trained and authorised personnel operate powered equipment.
Ensuring that suitable personal protective equipment is provided, such as gloves, safety footwear, eye and ear protection, high visibility clothing and respiratory protection where necessary, and that it is worn and maintained correctly.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee of Gardeners Purley has a responsibility to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Employees are expected to:
Follow all safety instructions, safe systems of work and site rules issued by management or site controllers.
Use tools, machinery and personal protective equipment properly and in accordance with training and manufacturer guidance.
Report any hazards, unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, near misses or incidents to their supervisor as soon as possible so that corrective action can be taken.
Refrain from horseplay, misuse of equipment, or any behaviour that could put themselves or others at risk while working.
Attend health and safety training sessions and toolbox talks and apply the knowledge gained in their day-to-day tasks.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before commencing gardening work at a new or existing site, an assessment will be made of the environment and the tasks to be undertaken. This may include consideration of access and egress, slopes and uneven ground, underground services, overhead cables, traffic routes, proximity to the public, and weather conditions.
Where significant risks are identified, appropriate control measures will be put in place. These may include barriers or signage to separate work areas from public spaces, safe systems for loading and unloading materials, and restrictions on certain activities during adverse weather or poor visibility.
Safe working procedures will cover, as appropriate, lawn mowing and strimming, hedge cutting, pruning and small tree work, planting and soil preparation, application of garden chemicals where required, waste handling and disposal, and use of ladders or mobile platforms for working at low height.
Training, Information and Supervision
Gardeners Purley will ensure that all employees receive appropriate training for their roles. This includes induction training on general health and safety requirements, specific instruction on the safe use of machinery and equipment, manual handling techniques, safe handling and storage of substances, and emergency procedures.
Where specialised tasks are undertaken, such as the use of certain chemicals or powered equipment, only staff with relevant competence and, where applicable, recognised qualifications will be permitted to carry out the work.
Supervisors will monitor working practices on site to ensure that procedures are followed, and that any unsafe behaviour or conditions are addressed promptly.
Equipment, Tools and Personal Protective Equipment
All gardening tools and machinery used by Gardeners Purley will be suitable for the task, properly maintained and stored securely when not in use. Pre-use checks will be carried out to identify any defects or damage that could compromise safety.
Personal protective equipment will be issued based on the risks associated with each task. As a minimum, this may include safety footwear and gloves, with additional items such as eye and ear protection, long-sleeved clothing or high visibility garments depending on the work activity and site conditions.
Chemical and Environmental Safety
Where the use of garden chemicals such as fertilisers, weed control products or cleaning agents is necessary, they will be selected, stored, transported, used and disposed of in accordance with relevant safety data and legal requirements.
Only trained personnel will handle such substances, and exposure will be minimised by using the least hazardous products and methods suitable for the job. Care will be taken to protect plants, wildlife, watercourses, neighbouring properties and the wider environment.
Public, Client and Property Protection
Gardeners Purley recognises its duty to protect clients, visitors and members of the public from risks arising from our work. Measures may include cordoning off work areas, using warning signs, managing vehicle movements and ensuring tools and materials are kept secure and tidy.
We will take reasonable steps to prevent damage to client property, including buildings, fences, vehicles, garden structures and planting. Any accidental damage or incidents will be reported promptly to the client and investigated.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported as soon as practicable. Records will be kept to enable analysis of trends and to support continuous improvement. Where required, incidents will be notified to the relevant enforcing authority.
Emergency procedures, including arrangements for first aid, fire, serious injury, spillage or other site-specific risks, will be communicated to staff before work begins. Employees must familiarise themselves with the emergency provisions for each site and follow them without delay in the event of an incident.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly and updated as necessary to reflect changes in legislation, industry best practice, our operations or findings from incident investigations and risk assessments.
Gardeners Purley will monitor health and safety performance through inspections, audits, reviews of accident reports and consultation with employees. We are committed to learning from experience and to making improvements that further enhance the safety of our gardening services for everyone involved.
